One down, one to go. Will now be gearing up for the Big Sunday at First Site in Colchester. The (not so) Secret Vintage Fair will be taking part on July 8th at what will prove to be an eventful day, I'm sure. It's a FREE event so come along and join in.
A lovely vintage french cotton fabric I picked up from Etsy has made a super little clutch bag. I love those vintage shades of green and the abstract design. Another for the Secret Vintage Fair of course!
A cute cross body bag with leather strap made in genuine 1970's Grace Sullivan 'Desdemona' fabric designed for Moygashel. Available at the Secret Vintage World, The Minories, Colchester on 26th May. Tickets available HERE or pay on the day.

A clutch bag presented on a plate is a bit weird , I know, but the colours were so good together it had to be done. These plates have got to date from the 50s so a perfect backdrop for a reprint of a Sanderson fabric called 'Festival' produced for the Festival of Britain in 1951, which gave British design and manufacturing a boost after the war. A couple more pics without the plates just for good measure! The clutch has a removable handle and a dupion silk lining, complete with open and zipped pockets. The flap fastens with a magnet and shows off that great mid-century abstract design.
Come and find it and me at the Secret Vintage Fair on 26th May! I've signed up for the Secret Vintage World Fair. Click HERE for a link to buy tickets. There's a special half price ticket offer until April 5th. It's on Saturday May 26th and it's in Colchester. But that's all I'm allowed to tell, until a bit nearer the time or the Secret Vintage Fair Police will be after me. I do know it's going to be a fun event with oodles of stalls, entertainment, a bar and a salon where you can be beautified in the best vintage fashion! I've looked out some vintage and retro fabrics and am busy making suitable items. It's a bit difficult to know which era to concentrate on, so I'm doing a bit of everything. William Morris designs were very popular in the 70's. I have a piece of Sanderson 'Festival' (a recent reprint) which hails from the Festival of Britain in the 50's. I also have some bright 60's floral prints that will catch the eye! Don't worry-if you buy a ticket they will email to let you know where to go!
Come and find me and I'll look out for you! A new Mum and Dad approached me for their first purchase in preparation for their expected addition to the family! Isn't that lovely? The fabric needed to be leafy and the bag roomy and able to be carried on your back to leave hands free! I sent them lots of leafy pictures and they chose this vibrant jungle print. I already had a lovely green cotton for the lining and a colourful ladybird waterproof fabric for the changing mat. I included zipped pockets back and front, with small ribbon zip pulls, rather than my usual beads (health & safety!). The back pocket is lined with waterproof fabric, which is bound to be useful at some point! It has a zipped top for extra security under the flap and four elastic topped pockets inside. Adjustable shoulder straps to fit both Mum and Dad and a handy grab loop on top! (Smug note: I managed to match the pattern on the flap with the body of the bag! Yay!) The changing mat fits neatly in the centre, so all ready now to stuff full of baby things for a day out in the jungle! 03/05/18 Update: I also made a matching zipped purse and drawstring bag, which was a gift from me at the baby shower!
You know you have just the right fabric to make a lovely retro bag, but you can't remember which box it's in, and you have to go digging or turn it upside down to find what you want. Finally you come to the realisation, that despite your up-bringing that taught you to be frugal, you're going to have to spend your Christmas money and a bit more on some proper storage. Well-thank goodness for Ikea online. No more traipsing miles around the warehouse filling up your yellow bag with Tillstellning cheap napkins (and you can't make up your mind whether to go for practical white or that lovely green, so you get both and they last you the next ten years!) and kitchen utensils Gnarp and Trojka that you don't need and can't pronounce! Instead you sit in the comfort of your own home and happily spend umpteen £££ on some shiny new cupboards, a new table and a little table top shelf unit. It felt so decadent but oh so good! Seven brown boxes were efficiently delivered by an affable top-knotted lad and his grinning brawny mate. We had to get it all upstairs (no - keep it at this angle and bump it up!) and putting them together was problem free-we're dab hands with a powered screwdriver! Well the other half is - I'm good at deciphering instructions! Then came the fabric sorting and re-organising, which took a couple of evenings.
I am somewhat smug at the result. Red retro fabric? Right hand cupboard, third shelf down on the left. (By the way I'm running out of napkins...) I've tweaked the hip purse pattern (see last blog) so that it can now be a hip purse, a shoulder bag or a clutch! Now what do I call it? A trio? A triad? A tripleticule? Answers on a postcard-on second thoughts-in comments below, please! Update: A car journey and some brainstorming later came up with 'Multi-pur-purse'! Get it?
